IIT Madras Sweeps Top Honors

The Indian Institute of Technology Madras (IITM) received top ranking in the 2021 National Institutional Rankings Framework (NIRF), adopted by the Government of India in 2015 to rank institutions of higher education throughout the country.

The rankings were announced on September 9 by Dharmendra Pradhan, Minister of Education. IITM ranked No. 1 in the “Overall” category for the third consecutive year and No. 1 in the “Engineering” category for the sixth consecutive year. In the newly launched “Research Institutions” category, IITM ranked No.  2, second only to the Indian Institute of Science Bengaluru. IITM thanked the Bhupat & Jyoti Mehta Family Foundation (MFF) for the “vital role” it played in IITM “attaining this goal.”

NIRF bases its overall recommendations on the parameters of “Teaching, Learning, and Resources,” “Research and Professional Practice,” “Graduation Outcomes,” Outreach and Inclusivity,” and “Perception.” According to the Ministry of Education, 6,272 applications for ranking in various categories were made by 4,030 institutions, including 1,657 institutes in the “Overall” category and 1,143 in the “Engineering” category.
