When Srilekshmi’s PhD advisor at IISc Bangalore finally agreed to let her participate in an exchange program during her fourth year, she did not know that four months at Rice University would fundamentally reshape how she thinks about research culture, mentorship, and trust.
From Malappuram, Kerala, to IISc’s microscopy labs, to Rice University, and now heading to RWTH Aachen University in Germany for her postdoc, Srilekshmi’s journey reflects the interdisciplinary curiosity that defines outstanding researchers. But the lessons about how to collaborate and lead may prove most enduring.
Challenging Assumptions
Srilekshmi’s PhD work tackled a critical aviation challenge: understanding what happens to nickel-based superalloy turbine blades under the extreme conditions of flight, including high temperatures, corrosion, constant deformation. Her research challenged conventional wisdom, demonstrating that certain types of deformation actually increase oxidation resistance, contrary to industry belief.
“That’s the star factor of my research,” she says, recognizing her findings contribute to a longer trajectory of innovation in aerospace materials, even if adoption takes time.
Her choice of IISc for her PhD was deliberate. Unlike institutions where only specialists operate high-end microscopes, IISc provided hands-on training for everyone. “You do your project yourself, you do your research yourself.” This approach shaped her identity as a microscopist and prepared her for what came next.
A Different Kind of Trust
At Rice, working with Professors Pulickel Ajayan and Robert Vajtai, Srilekshmi shifted to examining lab-grown diamonds doped with elements to create semiconductors useful for chip manufacturing and defense. Her microscopy expertise helped determine where dopant elements positioned themselves in the crystal lattice, critical information for semiconductor development.
But what struck her most was not the research itself, it was the culture around equipment access. In India, she explains, limited funding means extensive precautions: “Once you get trained for equipment, you have to use it for 80 hours to be an expert user.” At Rice? “They train you, and they trust you. That’s it.”
This trust-based approach rather than fear-based protection changed how she thought about conducive ecosystems. “When they trust you, you don’t feel like breaking that trust, and you do everything perfectly.”
The research groups were larger, extremely receptive, and more interdisciplinary than she had earlier experienced, spanning physics, chemistry, and materials science. “They’re welcome to all ideas, even if it’s not going to work.” It reminded her of being a schoolchild at a science exhibition, fascinated by every possibility.
Houston Moments
The Mehta Rice Engineering Scholarship’s comprehensive approach made the experience memorable beyond research. Program coordinator Jennifer arranged tickets to the Houston Rodeo – entirely foreign to someone from Kerala – and VIP access to NASA’s Johnson Space Center. “Being in India, you’re always fascinated about NASA,” Srilekshmi notes.
The timing of her January-to-April stay proved perfect: warm enough to enjoy Houston, early enough to avoid the brutal summer.
Mentorship That Matters
Perhaps the most profound impact came from lessons in mentorship, both at IISc and Rice. A senior professor at IISc, whose reputation initially made her hesitant, turned out to be someone who gave complete attention during discussions, setting his phone aside for hours.
The professors at Rice University personally toured her through every lab, explaining each piece of equipment. “That was something I didn’t expect, making me feel like I belonged there.”
These lessons shaped her vision for her own future as faculty: “Listen to your students. Welcome their ideas. Give them your full attention.” She envisions a research group built on appreciation, accessibility, and mutual learning. “Although you’re a professor, you may not know 50% of what your student would be doing. So I would just aim be open to them, just learn from them.”
Building Forward
After completing her PhD in March 2025 and a brief, difficult stint at Arizona State University, Srilekshmi has secured a postdoc at RWTH Aachen starting December 2025. There, she will work on aqueous corrosion, building on her PhD expertise while continuing to develop her microscopy skills.
From turbine blades to diamonds to corrosion in aqueous environments, her interdisciplinary path reflects a researcher comfortable across traditional boundaries. Her ultimate goal: academia, teaching students, conducting meaningful research, and running a lab that embodies the best of what she has experienced.

The Long View
Srilekshmi’s trajectory illustrates how strategic investments create compound returns. The Mehta Rice Engineering Scholarship didn’t just facilitate four months of semiconductor diamond research, it exposed her to trust-based collaboration, broader interdisciplinary approaches, and models of mentorship that will shape how she leads her own group someday.
As she prepares for Germany and the next chapter of her research career, she carries forward a vision of what collaborative, open environment research communities can look like, formed in Houston’s labs and rodeos and NASA tours, where everything fell perfectly into place.
