On October 9, 2017, the Indian Technical Institute Madras (IITM) held an inauguration ceremony for Block 2 of the Bhupat and Jyoti Mehta School of Biosciences. The additional building will house state-of-the-art research facilities, including the National Cancer Tissue Biobank (NCTB), the first facility of its kind in India. NCTB provides researchers with high-quality cancer tissues and patient data to facilitate improvements in cancer diagnosis and treatment.

The Bhupat & Jyoti Mehta Family Foundation (MFF) sponsored the new building, as well as earlier construction of Block 1 of Bhupat and Jyoti Mehta School of Biosciences, which houses the Department of Biotechnology.
