IIT Indore Launches Revolutionary Schools in Partnership with Mehta Family Foundation
The Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Indore has announced a landmark partnership with the Bhupat & Jyoti Mehta Family Foundation to establish two groundbreaking academic schools focused on sustainability and biomedical engineering, marking a significant milestone in India's higher education landscape.
In a ceremony held in New Delhi, IIT Indore and the Mehta Family Foundation (MFF) officially launched the Mehta Family School of Sustainability and the Mehta Family School of Biosciences and Biomedical Engineering. These represent the seventh and eighth schools established by the foundation nationwide, spanning an impressive 200,000 square feet of world-class infrastructure.
Pioneering Sustainability Education
The Mehta Family School of Sustainability represents a first-of-its-kind institution in India, dedicated to climate-conscious innovation and leadership. The school will launch India's inaugural Bachelor of Technology (BTech) program in Environmental Economics and Sustainable Engineering, creating a unique interdisciplinary approach to environmental challenges.
• Energy Systems and Battery Technology
• Environmental Economics and Environmental Law
• Water and Climate Studies
The sustainability school aims to graduate over 400 professionals through BTech programs and more than 1,000 additional professionals through Executive Master's and PhD programs over the next decade, addressing India's urgent need for climate expertise.
Revolutionary Healthcare Innovation Hub
The Mehta Family School of Biosciences and Biomedical Engineering positions itself at the intersection of biology, technology, data, and artificial intelligence. This pioneering academic hub focuses on developing data-driven solutions for critical health challenges, including endemic diseases like chikungunya and dengue, while addressing the escalating threat of antimicrobial resistance (AMR).
The biomedical school's curriculum spans critical domains including AI in Healthcare and Bioinformatics, Drug Discovery, Molecular Biology, Biomanufacturing, and Wearable Health Technologies. Plans include establishing a cutting-edge biomanufacturing hub to support India's growing biotechnology sector.
Government Recognition and Support
The partnership has garnered significant government support, with key officials praising the initiative's alignment with national priorities. The formal agreement was signed in the presence of Prof. Abhay Karandikar, Secretary of the Department of Science & Technology, and Dr. Rajesh S. Gokhale, Secretary of the Department of Biotechnology.
Dr. Gokhale emphasized the significance of convergence between engineering and biology, noting that the initiative aligns well with emerging national frameworks like the Bio-E3 policy and helps position India as a global leader in key science and technology parameters.
Strategic Impact and Future Vision
This partnership represents what officials describe as the largest single philanthropic contribution to IIT Indore, demonstrating the foundation's commitment to building India's intellectual capital in emerging technology fields. The initiative reflects a broader strategy to create world-class educational institutions that can compete globally while addressing local challenges.
Both schools are designed to produce graduates equipped with interdisciplinary knowledge, practical skills, and research capabilities essential for India's technological advancement. The programs will prepare professionals for leadership roles across pharmaceutical, biotechnology, medical devices, policy, and research sectors.
The establishment of these schools at IIT Indore, strategically located in central India, positions the institution as a hub of interdisciplinary excellence in sustainability and biomedical engineering, contributing to the nation's goals of technological self-reliance and innovation leadership.
