Energy Systems, Global Exposure, and Confidence: How RICE Showed Mohit What Academic Leadership Could Look Like

When Mohit arrived at Rice University for his research stay, he was already well into his PhD – focused and clear about his field. What he did not anticipate was how deeply the experience would reshape the way he thought about research culture, academic dialogue, and his own role as a researcher. Four months later, he returned not just with experimental progress, but with a sharper sense of confidence, and direction.

Now in the later stages of his PhD at IIT Delhi, currently based at its international campus in Abu Dhabi, Mohit reflects on his time at Rice as a formative moment that expanded how he views global research spaces and the possibilities they offer.

Anchoring Research in Global Contexts

Mohit’s doctoral research focuses on photothermal energy systems, especially systems that combine photovoltaic electricity generation with solar-thermal heat collection. He came up with an elegant idea: what if we capture heat before it even reaches the photovoltaic panel? His time at Rice’s Preston Innovation Lab shifted his focus from developing solutions in isolation to thinking carefully about the context or the where and how they might be applied. Exposure to advanced systems and research practices prompted deeper reflection on how technologies developed globally can be adapted meaningfully for diverse conditions including those in India.

This perspective, he says, was as valuable as any specific experimental outcome.

Experiencing a Different Academic Culture

When Professor Daniel Preston, “the best person for me” according to Mohit, agreed to mentor him, he introduced a research culture built on intensive, structured engagement. “Every week had a rhythm,” he recalls. “You had to come prepared to explain what you’d done, why it mattered, and what you planned next.”

Weekly meetings combined research presentations with journal discussions, where scholars were expected to defend ideas, not just present them. Mohit delivered two major presentations during his stay one tracing his broader research journey and another summarising his work at Rice.

“These discussions taught me how to think more critically and communicate with confidence,” he reflects. “You learn how to respond when your ideas are questioned, and that changes how you prepare and how you think.”

Over time, the structure and openness of these exchanges strengthened his academic voice and helped him engage more comfortably as a peer in international research settings.

Learning Beyond the Lab

Living with fellow Mehta Scholars from different institutions and disciplines added another layer to the experience. Their conversations extended beyond research topics, offering insight into different ways of thinking about problem-solving, and even career choices. “It made me realise that there isn’t one fixed route in research,” Mohit says. “Everyone finds their own way.”

Beyond campus, the group explored Houston together visiting museums, local landmarks, and NASA’s Johnson Space Center. Support from the Rice team helped them settle in quickly, allowing Mohit to focus fully on learning and engagement rather than logistics.

One particularly meaningful moment was meeting the Mehta Family at a dinner hosted at their home. “What stayed with me was the personal attention,” he recalls. “Rahul Mehta didn’t have to take the time to meet us, but he did. It reinforced that the scholarship values people.”

The financial support of the scholarship also played an important role allowing Mohit to concentrate fully on his work and learning.

Carrying the Experience Forward

As Mohit looks ahead, his time at Rice has deepened his understanding of how context shapes research impact. Exposure to photothermal and hybrid energy systems already operational in parts of Europe led him to reflect on why similar technologies have yet to take root in India. Differences in climate, infrastructure, and energy needs, he notes, mean that solutions cannot simply be transferred unchanged; they must be carefully rethought and adapted.

While he has not yet decided whether his future work will focus specifically on deploying these systems in India, the experience sharpened his interest in addressing the broader limitations of the technology itself. That global perspective has shifted how he approaches research, less as an isolated academic pursuit and more as a foundation for solutions that can evolve across contexts. In this way, the Mehta Rice Engineering Scholarship helped him see how international research experiences can strengthen capability, and innovation closer to home.

Looking forward, Mohit hopes to continue in research, whether in academia or industry, ideally in environments that value collaboration, rigor, and openness. “Even if I join a company, I want to work in R&D,” he says. “The fellowship helped me see that research doesn’t stop at borders and that global exposure can strengthen work done closer to home.”
