A Global Leader in Bioengineering, Bioinformatics, and Systems Biology
Dr. Shankar Subramaniam is a globally recognized scientist and academic leader in bioengineering, bioinformatics, systems biology, and computational medicine. He serves as Professor of Bioengineering, Bioinformatics and Systems Biology, Computer Science and Engineering, Cellular and Molecular Medicine, and Nanoengineering at the University of California San Diego (UC San Diego).
He holds the inaugural Joan and Irwin Jacobs Endowed Chair in Bioengineering and Systems Biology and previously served as Chair of the UC San Diego Bioengineering Department from 2008 to 2013. He was also the founding director of the university’s Bioinformatics Graduate Program. In addition, he holds adjunct appointments at the Salk Institute for Biological Studies and the San Diego Supercomputer Center, and serves as Professor at the Center for Cardiovascular Bioinformatics and Modeling at Johns Hopkins University.
Before joining UC San Diego, Dr. Subramaniam held leadership and faculty positions at the University of Illinois at Urbana–Champaign, where he directed the Bioinformatics and Computational Biology Program at the National Center for Supercomputing Applications and co-directed the W.M. Keck Center for Comparative and Functional Genomics. His research spans bioinformatics, systems biology, computational genomics, precision medicine, and biomedical data science. Dr. Subramaniam is a Fellow of the American Institute for Medical and Biological Engineering and a Fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS). His honors include the Genome Technology All Star Award, UC San Diego Faculty Excellence in Research Award, and recognition as a Distinguished Scientist at the San Diego Supercomputer Center.
