Mehta Family School of Sustainability at IIT Indore

Established in 2025, the Mehta Family School of Sustainability at IIT Indore is a forward-looking institution dedicated to addressing some of the most urgent challenges of our time – climate change, environmental degradation, and the responsible stewardship of natural resources.

The School offers a first-of-its-kind undergraduate BTech program that integrates environmental economics with sustainable engineering, alongside specialized postgraduate and doctoral programs. Together, these programs are designed to develop a new generation of leaders equipped with interdisciplinary expertise across engineering, science, and economics. Over time, the School aims to build a talent pipeline of more than 400 graduates and over 1,000 trained professionals who can drive meaningful, scalable solutions.

At its core, sustainability is about meeting present needs without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own. It lies at the intersection of environmental resilience, economic viability, and social equity. The School’s work is anchored in these three principles, ensuring that innovation is not only technologically sound, but also economically practical and socially inclusive.

To accelerate impact and advance solution-oriented research, the School is establishing three Centres of Excellence:

Centre of Excellence for Energy Systems and Battery Technology

Focused on reducing dependence on fossil fuels and accelerating the transition to clean energy, this centre will advance next-generation battery chemistries for grid and decentralized applications, as well as renewable technologies such as hydrogen fuel cells and photovoltaics.

Centre of Excellence for Environmental Economics and Environmental Law
This centre will drive research at the intersection of policy, economics, and sustainability. Its work will focus on natural resource management across water, energy, land, and forests, alongside climate resilience and cost-effective pathways to decarbonization.

Centre of Excellence for Water and Climate Studies
Addressing the dual challenges of water security and climate change, this centre will focus on areas such as microplastics mitigation, extreme weather forecasting, and advanced hydrological and climate modeling.
Through these initiatives, the Mehta Family School of Sustainability seeks to become a hub for collaboration across academia, industry, government, and civil society – translating knowledge into action and innovation into impact.
